Methven Big Air - Press release

Thrills and Spills at the Speight’s Summit Methven Big Air!

The return of the Methven Big Air last night drew thousands of eager spectators, keen to see big air from top skiers and boarders on the huge 17m snow ramp and high octane action from Australasia’s big FMX names and they were certainly not disappointed.

Great weather and a stellar line up attracted an audience of over 5000 for the action packed night, including spectacular fireworks and fire dancing then finishing with a wicked after party featuring kiwi bands, Doppler, The Valves and ElemenoP.

For the first time in the history of the event, Freestyle MotoX (FMX) riders flew more than 75ft over the snow ramp to a dirt landing. The crowd were treated to holy grabs, rock solids, off the side heart attacks and even a no handed back flip by superstar Kane Saul from Australia. Mitch McHardy from Palmerston North gave everybody the biggest heart attack of the evening with his first attempt at a public back flip to a dirt down ramp. After landing badly, he was flown to Christchurch Hospital and although he sustained injuries, he will make a full recovery and is already asking when he can ride again!

New Zealand’s top skiers and snowboarders also impressed in the with an array of tricks and their fair share of dramatic spills. Nick Brown from Queenstown took out the men’s snowboarding with a front side 900 narrowly beating Nick Hyne also from Queenstown who threw a switch backside 720. Hamish Martin was third with a clean backside 720 Japan. The ski competition was won by Kevin McClory from the USA pulling a switch cork 7. Hamish McDougall followed up in 2nd and Methven skier Joe Dole rewarded his many local supporters with 3rd place.

The entertainment continued into the night with The Rock After Party and more than 2000 party goers rocked to the beats of the bands headlined by top act ElemenoP.

Event organiser Karyn Heald was thrilled with the turnout and support shown for the return of the Big Air. “Strong support from sponsors, local businesses and the huge numbers of crew has been the key to getting the event off the ground again. Seeing so many people having such a great night makes all the hard work worthwhile” she said.

OTHER EVENTS

Rail Jam and After Party 08

The Blue Pub, Methven hosted a huge evening of extreme entertainment with the 2008 annual Rail Jam and After Party. The night's festivities kicked off with the open Rail Jam held right in the front of the Blue Pub. 24-meter rail parks were going off with the best seats in the house on the deck of The Blue.

The Samuel's Bar at the Blue Pub then hosted a VIP after party with a ripper night of live music featuring three hot live acts including local Methven rockers Doppler, Dunedin sensations The Julian Temple band and headline act GOOD NIGHT NURSE who have just completed a very successful tour of Australia promoting their new album - they rocked it at the Blue on this huge night.

Peak to Pub Multisport Event

This event tripled in size and popularity over the 6 years Karyn looked after it. The logistics of skiing down Mt Hutt, mountain biking down the ski area road and then running along publics roads for 10km to the pub in Methven were a mixed bag but the end result was a very popular event attracting a wide range of sportspeople and a solid support base of sponsors. Again council approvals, road closures and a large crew were required to manage this event which is successfully run to this day.

Kaikoura Roots Festival

Over a very short period of time the Kaikoura Roots Festival established itself as one of NZ's leading outdoor weekend music events. With it’s seaside site lined with trees, and a musical line up of epic proportions, this event became an incredibly important one for many music lovers nationwide.

Tickets were limited as this event was held over a weekend with most (if not all) staying in allocated camping areas. Karyn held a major operational role controlling the entrances and assisting with security and traffic flow in and out of the area. This job was an offshoot from working with Salmonella Dub at the Methven Big Air and it was a true privilege and great experience to be involved in an event of this nature.
